A Look at the Work of the Colcom Foundation Reveals an Organization Dedicated to Promoting Environmental Sustainability

Launched in 1996 by its founder Cordelia S. May, the Colcom Foundation is an organization that has worked diligently over the past three decades to promote efforts to address the man-made factors related to the Sixth Mass Extinction.

2005 saw the Colcom Foundation receive a substantial amount of additional funding upon the passing away of its founder. It operates across the southwestern corner of the state of Pennsylvania with work being done in counties that include Westmoreland, Washington, Indiana, Bedford, Fayette, Armstrong, and Allegheny. This work includes involvement with a variety of groups that are making a difference for the environment and the cause of promoting sustainable practices.

One of the groups that is supported by the Colcom Foundation is the Environmental Integrity Project. This grassroots organization operates on a non-profit basis and acts as a non-partisan watchdog. Its goal is to promote environmental laws being enforced effectively. The foundation also works with the team at Fair Shake Environmental Legal Services. This group has done excellent work in the area of supporting individuals affected by environmental issues in Pennsylvania. The law firm operates on a non-profit basis.

In the area of conservation, the Colcom Foundation is involved with a variety of organizations such as the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. This organization runs a Revolving Fund that provides grants in the form of land trusts provided at zero interest. Another organization that the foundation works with is the Hollow Oak Land Trust.

It works within the Pittsburgh Airport Corridor with a focus on protecting green spaces. WeConservePA is also connected to the work of the foundation. This group helps individuals and organizations to conserve land in a manner that is both effective and efficient. This work includes a focus on the protection of waterways.
