How the Colcom Foundation Protects the Environment and Fights Overpopulation

In 1952 a 23-year-old woman came to the conclusion that the greatest threats facing the planet were overpopulation and environmental destruction. This was Cordelia S. May, the woman who would found the Colcom Foundation and advocate for a better future for all of us. Having passed away in 2005, Colcom carries on her legacy and continues to fight for the preservation of the environment and human civilization as we know it.

A Creeping Threat

One of the many insights that Cordelia S. May took to heart in her younger years was the fact that ecological disaster is something that happens so slowly that it isn’t even recognizable until it is too late. In fact, scientific evidence suggests that we are currently living in the Sixth Mass Extinction on the planet. Realizing this fact, Cordelia decided that she had to take action and began working towards fighting what she saw as the two biggest problems facing humanity: overpopulation and environmental destruction.

The Problem of Overpopulation

When you take into account how exponential mathematics works, you can really see how problematic overpopulation is. A larger population will reproduce at a faster rate creating less time to act as time goes on.

To address this, the Colcom Foundation has supported education and teaching that will help to lower unwanted births around the world. As for local efforts in the United States, they are working to find ways to ethically reduce immigration so that the US population age demographics will balance out. This will prevent the older demographic from vastly outnumbering the younger.

Keeping the Environment Safe

The majority of Colcom’s conservation efforts are focused in Southwestern Pennsylvania and seek to protect natural lands from the expansion of industrialization and urbanization. They also work with several other projects, such as The National Aviary, Tree Pittsburgh, and The Foundation for Pennsylvania Watersheds.

Averting Disaster

Saving the future means taking action today and that’s exactly what the Colcom Foundation is doing. By addressing the threats of overpopulation and environmental destruction, they are working towards a planet where future generations can thrive. Refer to this article for additional information.
