Stephen Bittel is a distinguished Miami Beach investor and philanthropist who has been mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in 2018. He was chairman of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party from 2010 to 2012. Bittel hosted President Joe Biden at his home. In 2016 and helped raise $15 million for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Reason for Not Running for Governor

Bittel is one of the few openly gay people in Florida politics. He said then that there was nothing illegal about what his company did. But there are still questions about Bittel’s past. He was accused of sexual harassment during a tumultuous race for DNC chair last year. Last month, Politico reported that former staffers and volunteers raised accusations. They claimed Bittel had unwanted touching and other inappropriate behavior over several years before he became chairman of the DNC finance team in 2016.

The Democratic Governors Association

The Democratic Governors Association sent a representative to Florida earlier this year to meet with Bittel about a possible campaign. In addition, it has been courting Bittel as he weighs whether or not to enter the race against Republican Gov. Rick Scott in 2018. Stephen Bittel said he was considering running for governor but declined to discuss specifics until after his work on Clinton’s campaign was complete.

Bittel has made most of his fortune by investing in real estate. In 1990 he founded Terra Group LLC, now known as TerraNovaCorp. He focused on single-family home rentals before moving into multi-family residences. In 1998 TerraNovaCorp CEO started developing commercial space in South Florida and, by 2005, had moved on to create industrial parks across the country. Today TerraNovaCorp has over 5 million square feet worth of space under management.
