Gino Pozzo Reaches the Pinnacle of European Soccer
The Pozzo family has played a role in European soccer for decades. Before Gino Pozzo took control of Watford F.C., his mother’s family served as custodians of Udinese F.C. in Italy. The Pozzo family invested in European soccer by purchasing their local club in the 1990s. After returning to Italy from his studies in the U.S., Gino became one of Europe’s innovative soccer executives.
Gino Pozzo has been working to improve the quality of scouting across the clubs his family owns. The Italian-born executive was unwilling to rest on his laurels as the head of the Udinese club. After returning from his studies at the Harvard Business School, Gino Pozzo moved forward with his wish to upgrade Udinese’s scouting network. The Pozzo family did not have the financial muscle to compete with the top clubs of Europe for established players and took a different route to success. Pozzo created a scouting network to find players who had not hit the heights at other clubs. Young players with a high resale value would become the lifeblood of Udinese and other clubs owned by the Pozzo family.
The desire to improve the soccer arm of his family led to Gino Pozzo moving his family to Barcelona. His time in Barcelona took him to the pinnacle of European soccer with a Pozzo-owned club in Europe’s top three leagues.
The passage to the Premier League of Watford is an achievement Pozzo can be proud of. When the family purchased Watford Football Club, they were stuck three levels below the Premier League. Three successive promotions took Watford to the Premier League, with Pozzo showing his global network of scouts is still impressive.
By the time the club reached the Premier League, the English soccer authorities had changed the rules to limit the effectiveness of the scouting network. Gino Pozzo remains one of the world’s leading soccer executives with an eye on retaining Watford’s success in the Premier League. See this article for additional information.
