Michael Polk Finds a Second Act Leading Implus
After decades steering some of the world’s largest consumer goods companies, Michael Polk Newell Brands chose to spend his next chapter somewhere smaller. He built his reputation at Kraft Foods and Unilever before taking the top job at Newell Brands, where he oversaw brands used in households across the globe. When he stepped down from Newell Brands in 2019, many assumed his executive career had reached its natural end.
That assumption did not hold for long. In 2020, Michael Polk agreed to become chief executive of Implus LLC, a fitness and active lifestyle company owned by Berkshire Partners. The move meant trading a sprawling public corporation for a private business with a sixteen-brand portfolio and a leaner team. For Polk, the shift was less about scaling down ambition and more about scaling up involvement.
Building Something Smaller On Purpose
Taking over Implus in the early months of the pandemic gave Polk little time to ease into the role. He had to rework how the company operated while keeping its finances steady during a period when supply chains and consumer habits shifted overnight. Rather than treat the disruption as a setback, he used it to reshape Implus into a company built for steadier growth ahead.
Polk has said the appeal of private company leadership lies in proximity to the actual work. At Newell Brands, decisions moved through layers of management before reaching the people who executed them. At Implus, he works alongside his team directly, shaping brand strategy and business development in real time rather than issuing direction from a distance.
He describes the current phase of his career as one of the most rewarding stretches of his professional life, driven by the chance to build something from a smaller starting point. Having once grown Newell Brands into a company worth many billions more than when he arrived, Polk now applies the same instincts to a private business, betting that the lessons of scale and the lessons of closeness are not so different after all.
