Shelton Haynes: A Leader in Promoting Diversity and Infrastructure Improvements on Roosevelt Island through the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation
Shelton Haynes is an accomplished lawyer and public servant who has made significant contributions to the Roosevelt Island community. Roosevelt Island is a two-mile-long island in the East River, between the boroughs of Manhattan and Queens in New York City. It is home to approximately 14,000 residents and is managed by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC).
Haynes served as the President and CEO of RIOC from 2006 to 2010. During his tenure, he oversaw numerous improvements to the island’s infrastructure, including installing solar-powered streetlights and renovating several parks and playgrounds. He was also instrumental in bringing a new tramway to the island, which provides residents and visitors with stunning views of the city skyline.
Shelton Haynes is also known for promoting diversity and inclusion on Roosevelt Island. He established the Diversity Committee to ensure that the island’s diverse population is represented in RIOC’s decision-making processes. He also worked to promote affordable housing on the island, recognizing that many residents were struggling with rising rents and the high cost of living in New York City.
Haynes’ contributions to the Roosevelt Island community did not go unnoticed. In 2010, he was awarded the Louis R. Miller Leadership Award by the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce for his work promoting economic development and community engagement. The New York State Assembly also recognized him for his dedication to public service and his contributions to the community.
Today, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation continues to thrive under the leadership of RIOC. The organization manages a wide range of services and amenities on the island, including parks, transportation, and public safety. Its mission is to provide a high quality of life for residents and visitors alike and to ensure that Roosevelt Island remains a vibrant and welcoming community for years to come.
