Alliance Defending Freedom is a United States legal organization to advocate, train, and fund religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family.

Alliance Defending Freedom is a nonprofit legal organization that defends people, especially Christians, who believe faith is at the core of daily living. We offer free legal help in more than 35 areas, including religious liberty cases that protect all Americans from choosing between keeping their jobs or living out their faith.

We advocate for your freedom at work by defending employees from religiously motivated firings and fighting for strong conscience clauses, so business owners can live out their faith without fearing government punishment.

We are one of America’s most active and effective legal groups dedicated to preserving life and defending marriage. We litigate cases nationwide for babies, children, parents, religious organizations, and other nonprofits.

Alliance Defending Freedom assist the public by training attorneys across America on programs to help them better understand their rights under the law. Every year we hold a national legal training conference with over 1,200 attorneys trained nationwide (in 2017 alone). Our extensive pro bono program has helped thousands of people find a pro bono attorney. The Alliance Defending Freedom awarded $9 million in grants to 2,500 nonprofits through Pro Vita Animarum: The Pro-Life Legal Center between 2003 and 2012.

The organization was founded in 1994 as the Alliance Defense Fund. It was renamed in 2014 following an expansion of its mission statement. Its president is Alan Sears, and the current chief litigator is Kristen Waggoner.
