John Hailer Led An Industry-Wide Shift In Investment Portfolio Construction

As the Head of Quantitative Asset Management for Europe and Asia at Natixis Global Asset Management and a pioneer in asset allocation theory, Exec at Natixis John Hailer has helped shape the future of quantitative investment strategies through his unique contributions. He has managed a multimillion-dollar portfolio dedicated to quantitative asset management strategies, created a quant team at Natixis, and led quant investment strategies throughout the industry. In addition to being recognized as one of the best asset allocation innovators, Mr. Hailer is also an investment adviser in the United Kingdom and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA). Mr. Hailer’s investment research significantly impacted the sector and contributed to shaping unique investing philosophies developed outside of quantitative investing.

John Hailer became a chief executive officer at the Global Asset Management after the financial crisis in 2008. He had bold ideas on how to keep the company afloat and make it profitable again. Some of these were going against conventional wisdom, and he needed to hire more innovative thinkers. Before taking over at Natixis, Mr. Hailer had been running Natixis’s quantitative investment office since 2005. His unique background made him stand out, as he was able to apply his wealth of knowledge and experience in quant investments to grow Natixis’s quantitative asset management (QAM) business.

This was a challenging feat. The capital markets industry was in transition, and the concept of quant investing was still new. John Hailer recognized that small companies needed to be equipped to take advantage of a new, sophisticated quantitative strategy due to their limited resources, which made it necessary for large investment entities to create a brand-new funding model. In 2008, he established a fund dedicated to QAM and explained it to the investment community in a series of articles published on the Advisor Perspectives blog. With its underlying risk parameters, the strategy would become an industry standard, and Natixis’s funds would be some of the first to use it.
